About This Product
ERW water pipes are electric resistance welded (ERW) steel pipes used in drinking and domestic water, hot water, central heating, air-conditioning, fire-fighting and compressed air lines. Turgut Boru keeps this group in stock at our Ostim warehouse in three forms: black plain-end pipe, galvanized threaded & socketed pipe, and anti-rust painted fire pipe. This page brings together the technical specifications common to all three types; for type-specific information, see the Black Steel Pipes, Galvanized Threaded & Socketed Pipes and Painted Fire Pipes pages.
Water pipes are listed to TS EN 10255 from 1/2" (21.3 mm) to 6" (165.1 mm), with wall thicknesses of 2.60 – 5.00 mm. For lines that need higher pressure or a larger diameter, TS EN 10217-1 pressure pipes are supplied in 21.3 – 323.9 mm outside diameter and 2.00 – 10.00 mm wall thickness. The standard length is 6 meters.
The pipes pass an eddy current test and a 50 bar hydrostatic leak test; medium-series pipes can be used for water at working pressures up to 25 bar. Wall thickness tolerance is -12.5% / +10% and straightness tolerance is 1 mm/m. Threading from 1/2" to 6" complies with TS 301, ISO 7-1, DIN 2999 and BS 21.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which standard are water pipes made to?
Water pipes are made to TS EN 10255 (formerly TS 301, DIN 2440/2441); pressure pipes are made to TS EN 10217-1.
What is the difference between the light, medium and heavy series?
The wall thickness differs for the same nominal size. The light series corresponds to TS 301/1-2, the medium series to TS 301/3 (DIN 2440) and the heavy series to TS 301/4 (DIN 2441).
Which tests do the pipes undergo?
An eddy current test and a 50 bar hydrostatic leak test.
How long are the pipes?
The standard length is 6 meters.
What is a 1/2" pipe in mm?
A 1/2" (DN 15) water pipe has an outside diameter of 21.3 mm; the listed wall thickness is 2.60 mm.
Which types are in stock?
Black plain-end pipe, galvanized threaded & socketed pipe, and anti-rust painted fire pipe.
Testing and Inspection
All pipes used in drinking and domestic water, hot water, central heating, air-conditioning, fire-fighting and air installations undergo non-destructive inspection with Eddy Current testing and a 50 bar hydrostatic leak test.
Medium series pipes can be used for water at operating pressures up to 25 bar.
Anti-Rust Painted Water Pipes
Water pipes are also supplied anti-rust painted. Anti-rust paint protects the outer surface of the pipe against corrosion; the manufacturer's standard colors are red (RAL 3009) and black (RAL 9005).
Painted pressure-resistant water pipes are produced to TS EN 10217-1. The size range is 1/2" (21.3 mm) – 12" (323.9 mm) outside diameter, 2.00 – 10.00 mm wall thickness.
Applications: water, central heating, fire-fighting and pressure line installations, and construction applications.
Current sizes and list prices: the “Painted Pressure-Resistant Water Pipes” table on the List Prices page.

Concealed / Under-Floor Installations
If the installation has to run under plaster or through the floor, the pipes must not come into contact with materials such as mortar made with unwashed sea sand, lime-based building materials, rubble or slag. A route away from wet ground should be followed. After the plumbing is laid, the system should be leak tested and the joints checked for water leaks. Embedded installations must be cut off from water and air; for this, the pipes should be bitumen-coated or fully painted with bitumen-based paint (chassis paint). After this painting, the pipes should also be covered with a 2-3 cm thick layer of high-dosage cement, leaving no voids. Pipes must never be wrapped in water-retaining materials such as paper (tar paper can be used because it does not retain water).
Laying in Soil
Some soils have an acidic effect. Since it is rarely possible to know the nature of the soil, the pipes should be insulated with tar paper or, best of all, a bitumen-based material for the pipeline to have a long service life. In short, if galvanized steel pipes must pass through any fill material or be used under plaster, they must be cut off from water and air; for this they should be fully painted with bitumen-based paint and sealed with concrete.
